As a new and growing company, mTrip is constantly evolving with new technology and features so travelers will always have the most intelligent and animated trip experiences. At mTrip’s launch we put much focus on two of our most unique and technologically advanced features – Augmented Reality (AR) and the brilliant mTrip Genius.

As you may already know, Augmented Reality is one of the newest and most exciting features on iPhone apps, especially in the travel industry. AR allows travelers to not only gain a greater perspective of their surroundings, but also to get a quick snapshot of all the tourist attractions, restaurants, hotels etc in any given area. While more and more developers are starting to add AR to their apps, mTrip was one of the first in the travel industry to launch this feature, even ahead of Lonely Planet.

Last week we talked about the mTrip Genius, a travel itinerary planner like no other. It generates your trip itinerary based on all the important factors you would normally take into account before planning a travel itinerary – trip dates, accommodation, travel interests, pace preference, traveler ratings and so on.

The Genius looks simple but what’s really going on behind the scenes only the intelligent algorithm knows! Leave that to us!

The mTrip Genius technology is exclusive to mTrip!

So what’s new on mTrip, you ask?

Search Function

Whereas before the mTrip search function allowed you to find a point of interest within a specific category, you can now search much more broadly.

Once you are in the app, just go into the ‘More’ tab and tap on ‘Search’ – start entering the point of interest name or even street name and mTrip’s travel directory will pull up the matching queries. Each search query that is populated will indicate what type of point of interest it is – restaurant, hotel, attraction, etc…

Multi-Tasking on iOS 4

If you have the iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4 and you have updated your system to iOS 4, multi-tasking will be one of your greatest tools. Lets say you want to add a new hotel to the travel guide but you don’t know the address and therefore need to access the Internet. Instead of quitting the app and starting over, you simply double tap the home screen button; this will bring you to more options for choosing what you want to do next. When you are done, double tap it again to return to mTrip.

Currency Converter

Go into the ‘More’ tab in the mTrip app to access the new currency converter and get exchange rates for the city you are visiting. Do note that the currency converter will give you the exchange rate for the city associated with the travel guide you purchased (if you purchased mTrip Paris it will give you the Є exchange rate). It will use your home currency automatically for the exchange rate but if you want to change that, go into ‘Settings’ in the ‘More’ tab and simply change your home currency. Don’t forget – within each point of interest in the travel guide directory, mTrip already lists out prices in your home currency. The work there is already done for you!

New Design for Directions

mTrip has simplified its design within the Map, for getting directions to and from points of interest. Now you simply tap on either the walking symbol or the subway symbol to get where you need to go, fast.

Edit/Delete Points of Interest

For those mTrip users that are creating their own updates to the travel guide, this will be a helpful update. If you add a point of interest to the travel guide and later decide you want to edit or delete it, no problem – the option is now given to you. Simply go into your Favorites and edit or delete the point of interest from there.

Additional Travel Guides Added

This month mTrip added five new city guides to its repertoire – Madrid, Moscow, Vienna and Washington, D.C. We are frequently adding new city guides monthly so check back soon for the latest travel guides!

Getting geared up for summer travels? To navigate your trip better, we’ve put together this helpful list of travel tips.

Book your ticket in advance

The more flexible you are about your travel dates, the better chance you have to save some money. Check into special fares or fly into an alternate airport and rent a car. Don’t forget your passport if you are flying internationally!

Plan your itinerary

Whether you are planning your itinerary yourself or using a special device be sure to do it in advance. If you are planning your itinerary yourself, do some research into different types of top-rated and off the beaten path attractions and restaurants that suit your fancy. Have a look at ratings and reviews to get a better idea if you don’t know yourself. If you are using a special device to plan your travel itinerary like an iPhone application test it out before you leave for your trip so that you feel prepared for your trip.

Get a travel guide

There are many different options for a traveler resource – one of the more known is the tried and true paperback travel guide but with the advent of high tech applications, travelers can now take along handy apps on their portable devices to help them through their travels.

Bring along a cell phone

Leave your laptop at home but be sure to bring along a cell phone for emergency, local calls or for using your handy apps. Just make sure you keep calls to a minimum and only use apps that don’t require roaming!

Arrive at the airport early

Difficult airport parking, long line and security checkpoints all add up so be sure to give yourself plenty of time before your flight takes off. 90 minutes is usually a good amount of time.

Don’t look like a tourist – Looking like a tourist can make you a good target for thieves so do your best to look knowledgeable. A great way to do this is to store maps, addresses, dictionaries and translation tools on your portable device. Instead of consulting a clumsy map or travel book, you will just look like a regular person on the go.

The Apple iPad hit the market last week with much anticipation. What does this tablet mean for business travelers and backpackers? Will it replace the laptop for on-the-road computing needs? Here are a few key features to take note.

Size & Shape – The iPad is .5 inches thick, only slightly thicker than the iPhone 3GS, and measures 9.56 x 7.47 inches. It weighs 1.5 pounds without 3G, and 1.6 with 3G.

Camera - There isn’t one. ‘Nough said.

Touch Keyboard - It’s a bit awkward to use with a very large touch screen keyboard.

Battery Life – Ten hours of constant use, with a one-month standby rating.

Email – Similar visual signals as the iPhone but better. You can preview your mailbox from any message with a pull-down menu, and preview any message from within the mailbox, with a pop-up window.

iPhone apps – The iPad is great for apps. Plus any apps you have downloaded to your iPhone can be automatically synced for free to your iPad.

Music – The music player is even more combined and exciting, a mix between the iPhone’s iPod interface and desktop iTunes.

Maps – Very similar conversion and interface from the iPhone but way better. You can view maps from above with high-resolution satellite imagery, up close with street view or with topography in new terrain view. You can also get directions from your current location.

Calendar & Contacts - The calendar app is desktop-like, until you open contacts and calendars, which look a lot like actual contact books and organizers.

iWork – A completely new version designed specifically for iPad. Each application has a great user interface. You can create slides, documents or spreadsheets with ease. Each App also integrates the Media inspector for easy access to photos and music.

Ebooks – Apple has developed an ebook to store for the iPad called iBooks. It greatly resembles iTunes.

So how do the iPad features translate into benefits for business travelers and backpackers?

The business traveler can now travel light, check emails, view contacts and work on docs, presentations and spreadsheets with ease all from the airplane, hotel or on the go. If you are seeking an intermediate mobile device that takes up little space, offers budget priced 3G connectivity, and provides all-day battery life the iPad might be your best option.

The backpack traveler will find some of the iPad features handy such as the maps, which are more interactive and easier to view than on the iPhone. No need to break out the giant paper map anymore! While checking email and IMs from the hostel or hotel is useful is this really a priority for the backpacker? And lets face it – the camera has become an integral part of our travel experience. The fact that iPad doesn’t have a camera could be a deal breaker for the traveler who seeks an all-in-one device.

So what are your thoughts on the iPad? Will it be your next travel tool of choice?
